GearShield™ FAQ
If you have a question about GearShield™ athletic gear odor remover, it’s answered here. These are the real questions practitioners ask — about how it works, how to use it, what gear it works on, whether it’s safe, and how to order. Straight answers, no marketing language.
How It Works
Why do most gear sprays stop working after a few days?
Because they don’t eliminate the odor source — they compete with it. Most consumer sprays deposit fragrance molecules in and around your gear. While the fragrance is present, it competes with the odor signal in your nose. Once the fragrance fades — usually within a day or two — the underlying odor returns, because the organic compounds that produce it were never addressed. You’re back to square one.
GearShield™ spray uses professional-grade oxidizer technology that breaks down the organic compounds responsible for odor at the molecular level. When the reaction is complete, those compounds are gone. There’s nothing left to produce odor.
What do you mean by ‘professional-grade oxidizer technology’?
It means the chemistry behind GearShield™ spray is the same category used in professional odor remediation work — not the enzyme-based or fragrance-based formulas sold in retail channels. Oxidizer-based chemistry eliminates the organic compounds responsible for odor rather than masking them or attempting to break them down slowly over time. It is more effective, faster-acting, and more reliable across gear types and contamination levels.
What’s the difference between GearShield™ spray and enzyme cleaners?
Enzyme cleaners work by introducing biological enzymes that slowly digest organic compounds over time. They require the right pH, temperature, and moisture conditions to work — and their effectiveness is inconsistent. They also leave the odor source in place during the process, which is why you often smell it again once they dry. Professional-grade oxidizer technology reacts immediately on contact with organic material, doesn’t require specific environmental conditions, and eliminates the source rather than slowly digesting it.
GearShield™ spray is described as both a cleaner and an odor remover. What does that mean?
Most odor sprays address the odor signal only — they don’t clean. GearShield™ spray eliminates the organic compounds that produce odor while simultaneously cleaning the gear surface. The bacteria, sweat residue, and organic material that have accumulated in the fabric or material are removed, not just covered. That’s why treating the same gear with GearShield™ spray repeatedly shows cumulative results — it’s reducing the total contamination load with each application.
Why does gear odor come back after washing?
Washing removes surface contamination but doesn’t eliminate deep organic material that has penetrated foam padding, vinyl, and synthetic fabrics. Standard detergents don’t break down the specific compounds responsible for gear odor — they dilute them. If contamination is deeply embedded, you can wash gear repeatedly and still notice odor when it warms up during training. GearShield™ spray reaches the source regardless of depth.
Do I need anything else besides the packet?
Yes, you’ll need a clean, empty 32 oz spray bottle with a standard trigger sprayer. You can pick one up at any store for $3-5, or reuse one you already have. Important: don’t reuse bottles from other cleaning products – use a clean bottle. Each order includes a waterproof label that stays on your bottle permanently, so you can refill it with future packets.
Using GearShield™ Spray
How do I mix and use GearShield™ spray?
GearShield™ spray ships as a concentrate. Empty the packet into a clean 32 oz. spray bottle, fill with cool tap water to the 32 oz. line, and shake for 30 seconds. That’s the complete mixing process — it takes less than a minute. Mixing instructions are printed on the label and included with every order.
How often should I treat my gear?
After every training session is the target for gear you use regularly. This prevents organic material from accumulating and keeps gear at a maintenance level where a single quick spray after each session is sufficient.
If you can’t treat after every session, treat as often as possible and use a rescue protocol when contamination has built up: apply, let dry completely, apply again. Two to three treatment cycles will resolve most established odor, including in gear that has been neglected for some time.
Do I spray inside gloves, or just the outside?
Both, but especially inside. The odor source in boxing gloves is almost entirely internal — the foam padding has absorbed sweat and the organic compounds are concentrated there. External-only treatment doesn’t reach the source. Spray inside each glove thoroughly, turn upside down to allow drainage, and let dry completely before your next session. Exterior surfaces can be wiped down separately.
Can I spray GearShield™ spray on my gi?
Yes, as long as you give it time to fully dry, the reaction is long complete and the gear is fully treated.
How long does one packet make, and how many uses do I get?
One packet makes one full 32 oz. spray bottle. The number of applications depends on how thoroughly you apply — a typical post-session treatment of a pair of boxing gloves uses 8–12 sprays – and how often you are training. Most practitioners training 4–5 days per week find one bottle lasts 2–4 weeks depending on how much gear they treat per session.
Does gear need to be wet or dry when I apply GearShield™ spray?
Treat gear while it is still damp from training — this is the ideal window. The organic compounds responsible for odor are most accessible while the gear is still warm and saturated. Waiting until gear has dried allows contamination to embed more deeply. Treat immediately after your session whenever possible.
I train 5 days a week. Which pack size makes sense for me?
If you treat gloves and a few pieces of gear after every session, a single 32 oz. bottle typically lasts 2–3 weeks for most practitioners training at that frequency. The 4-pack offers the best per-packet value and means you’re never caught without product. The 2-pack is the most popular choice for practitioners who want to keep supply on hand without overstocking.
Your Gear
What types of gear can I use GearShield™ spray on?
GearShield™ spray is formulated for the materials common in contact sports training gear: vinyl, synthetic leather, foam padding, cotton, polyester, and neoprene. This covers boxing gloves, MMA gloves, shin guards, headgear, knee pads, mouth guards, and even your gym bag.
One honest distinction worth making between gear types: GearShield™ spray performs differently on hard gear versus fabric.
For hard gear — boxing gloves, shin guards, headgear — the formula penetrates foam padding and eliminates the odor source directly. Results are consistent and immediate.
For fabric gear — gi, rashguards, wrestling singlets — GearShield™ spray is used as a pre-wash treatment, not a standalone spray-and-done solution. Apply to collar, armpits, and high-contact areas while the gi or rashguard is still damp after training, allow a 10–15 minute dwell time, then machine wash on a normal cycle using a non-bleach detergent. This combination meaningfully extends the time before contamination builds to the point of being noticeable and keeps fabric gear manageable session to session.
The one thing we won’t tell you is that GearShield™ spray will fully reverse deep, long-term odor that has accumulated over months or years in dense cotton or synthetic fabric. If a gi or rashguard has serious buildup, GearShield™ spray used consistently will slow the progression and keep it manageable — but fully reversing years of embedded contamination in fabric is beyond what any spray treatment can deliver.
Will GearShield™ spray damage my gloves or gear?
No. GearShield™ spray is safe for vinyl, synthetic leather, neoprene, foam padding, cotton, and polyester — the materials common in contact sports training gear. Apply as directed and allow gear to dry completely. If your gear has previously been treated with other products, especially bleach-containing products, test on a small area first.
My boxing gloves have years of accumulated odor. Can GearShield™ spray handle that?
Yes, but heavily contaminated gear requires a different approach than maintenance use. Gear with years of accumulated organic material has deeply embedded contamination — a single application addresses what it reaches, but additional treatments penetrate further. Three treatment cycles — apply, dry completely, apply again — resolves the overwhelming majority of established gear odor, including gloves that have been in regular use for years without treatment.
This is not a product limitation. It’s a function of how deeply organic material penetrates foam padding over time. The same three-cycle protocol works for badly contaminated gis, headgear, and other heavily used gear.
Does it work on mouth guards?
Yes. Apply a light spray to the mouth guard surface, allow to dry, rinse before use. Mouth guards accumulate significant bacterial load and are often overlooked in gear cleaning routines. GearShield™ spray eliminates the odor source the same way it does with other gear materials.
Can I use it on wrestling gear and headgear?
Yes. Wrestling headgear, knee pads, and shoes can all be treated. For headgear with foam padding and vinyl exterior, treat the interior padding — that’s where odor concentrates. Exterior surfaces can be wiped down. Allow to dry completely before next use.
What about gear bags?
Yes. The interior of a gear bag is one of the highest-contamination environments in training — gear goes in damp, the bag seals, and contamination accumulates on interior fabric over time. Spray the interior lining, leave the bag open to dry fully, before filling with items, especially any clothing that may be prone to discoloration. This is a maintenance step most athletes overlook.
Ordering & Shipping
What are my ordering options for GearShield™ spray?
GearShield™ spray is available in three configurations:
1-Pack ($19.99 + $2.99 shipping) — one concentrate packet. Makes one 32 oz. spray bottle. Perfect for trying the product for the first time.
2-Pack ($26.99, free shipping) — two concentrate packets. Our most popular option. Keeps backup product on hand and offers better per-packet value.
4-Pack ($44.99, free shipping) — four concentrate packets. Best per-packet value at $11.25 per 32 oz bottle. Ideal for regular trainers who want to maintain supply without reordering frequently.
Why does GearShield™ spray ship as a concentrate instead of a ready-to-use bottle?
Three reasons. First, you’re not paying to ship a heavy bottle of water — the concentrate ships in a standard envelope at a fraction of the cost of shipping liquid. Second, professional-grade oxidizer technology is most potent when freshly mixed — concentrates remain stable through shipping and storage; pre-mixed solutions degrade over time. Third, reusing your own 32 oz. spray bottle reduces packaging waste.
The total cost to you is significantly lower, and the product you mix at home is fresher than what you’d receive in a pre-mixed bottle.
What do I need that isn’t included?
A clean 32 oz. spray bottle and cool tap water. That’s it. Most households have a spray bottle already. If you need one, standard spray bottles are available at most stores for a few dollars. We recommend keeping a dedicated bottle for gear care.
How long does shipping take?
We ship all orders within 1-2 business days via USPS First Class Mail. Delivery typically takes 2-5 business days depending on your location. You’ll receive tracking information by email as soon as your order ships. All orders over $25 ship free.
What’s your return policy?
We stand behind GearShield™ spray completely. If you’re not satisfied for any reason, contact us at contact@leveloneservicebrands.com within 30 days of purchase. We’ll make it right — whether that’s a refund, replacement, or troubleshooting to ensure you get the results you need.
Safety & Ingredients
CRITICAL SAFETY NOTICE — READ BEFORE USING
Do not machine wash gear while it is still wet with GearShield™ spray.
The professional-grade oxidizer formula can react with bleach-containing detergents while wet. Ensure gear is completely dry before placing in the washing machine.
Standard water-based laundry detergents without bleach present no issue. This precaution applies specifically to bleach-containing detergents during the wet phase.
Is GearShield™ spray safe for skin contact?
GearShield™ spray is safe for skin contact once the formula has dried. Avoid direct contact with eyes. The formula is designed for application to gear surfaces — not for direct application to skin during training. Treat gear, allow to dry, then train normally.
Will there be residue on my hands from treated gloves during training?
No. Once the formula has dried completely, there is no active chemistry on the surface and no residue transfers to your hands. Ensure gloves are fully dry before training.
Can I use this if I have asthma or chemical sensitivities?
GearShield™ spray has no added fragrances or harsh chemical smells that trigger sensitivities. The solution itself is essentially odorless, or you might detect a mild swimming pool scent, which dissipates as it dries. As GearShield™ spray interacts with the odor-causing compounds, those compounds break down and release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air — sometimes, especially in cases of sweat and odor-causing compound build-up, you may smell this during the treatment process. This is completely normal and shows the product is working. Once the treatment is complete and the area dries, there will be no smell. Most people with sensitivities tolerate it well, but as with any product, use in a well-ventilated area and discontinue use if you experience any irritation. If you have a respiratory condition, asthma, or other medical condition that may be affected by airborne compounds during the treatment process, consult your physician before use.
Is GearShield™ spray safe to use around kids and other people in the gym?
Yes, the active reaction occurs during application and the drying phase. Once gear is dry, there is nothing to contact, inhale, or transfer. Treat gear in a ventilated area and allow to dry before storage or shared use.
Results & Troubleshooting
I sprayed my gloves and the odor came back. What happened?
A few things to check. First: did you treat the interior of the gloves, not just the exterior? The odor source is in the foam padding inside — exterior-only treatment doesn’t reach it. Second: is the gear still smelling during training while the gloves are warming up, or at rest? Some contamination is deeply embedded enough to require multiple treatment cycles. Third: did you allow the gear to dry completely before training? GearShield™ spray needs to dry fully for the reaction to complete.
For gloves with established odor, use the rescue protocol: apply internally and externally, dry completely, apply again. Two to three cycles resolves the overwhelming majority of cases.
How many times do I need to treat before the odor is gone?
For lightly contaminated gear being treated after each session, one application is generally sufficient to maintain odor-free gear. For gear with established odor from accumulated use, two to three treatment cycles — apply, dry, apply again — resolves the overwhelming majority of cases. Gear that has never been treated and has years of contamination may benefit from four to five cycles before reaching maintenance status.
Why not just use bleach?
Bleach damages gear materials, causes discoloration, and degrades fabric and stitching over time. It’s also a contact irritant that can cause skin reactions. Professional-grade oxidizer technology eliminates the odor without damaging materials, degrading foam padding, or leaving irritating residue. Bleach is not a safe option for gear you train in and against other people.
My gi smells even after washing. Will GearShield™ spray help?
We want to be straight with you on this one. GearShield™ spray applied to a gi before washing will slow down odor buildup and help manage it session to session — but it will not fully eliminate deep, long-term contamination that has accumulated over months or years of training. For these situations, our GearShield Odor Removal Guide can help you get the best results for your gi or rashguard.
From the Founder
I’ve been training in martial arts for over four decades. Shudokan karate black belt, JKD, Filipino Kali — and I earned my BJJ blue belt at 69. I know what gear odor looks like from the practitioner’s side, not just from a product development standpoint.
GearShield™ spray exists because I spent 18 months developing professional-grade odor remediation solutions and saw there was nothing in the athletic gear market that used the same class of chemistry. The consumer options — enzyme sprays, deodorizer balls, essential oil sprays — are not the same category. They mask. GearShield™ eliminates.
The FAQs on this page come from actual questions I’ve received and questions I’ve asked myself as a practitioner. If your question isn’t here, contact us at contact@leveloneservicebrands.com. I read every message and respond personally.
